Chennai Corporation council body has permitted a non-motorised transport policy (NMT) to promote cycle rickshaws, walking, pushcarts, cycling and other forms of mobility driven by human beings. The civic body has set a schedule of extending the area for pedestrians and cyclists by around 45% by the year 2018. It also executed policy decisions that chiefly targets of reducing the number of death percentage taking place among pedestrians and cyclists to zero per annum. By 2018, the public transport is expected to be about 65% for motorized trips. While within 5 years almost 80% of the streets will be having footpaths and these footpaths will be having 30 metre wide with unobstructed and continuous cycle track of 2 metre wide, stated the officials. The government body will ensure whether the officials have allocated at least 50-60% of the existing transport budget for the growth of NMT infrastructure.
